Escape to Szczawno-Zdroj: Poland's Historic Spa
My One-Day Reboot in Szczawno-Zdroj, Poland: Hide in Lush Greenery, Refresh with Mineral Waters, and Delight in Puff Pastry Cream Horns.
Walking around Szczawno-Zdroj
I traveled to Szczawno-Zdrój by taking a train from Wroclaw to Walbrzych and then a public bus from Walbrzych.
Szczawno-Zdroj is a charming spa town located in the central Sudetes mountains in Lower Silesia. The therapeutic benefits of this place were discovered many centuries ago. However, it experienced significant development and gained widespread fame as a European resort in 1815 under the governance of the Hochberg dynasty.
My first impression of this city was that it was quite small and very green. I walked around and found a main street with interesting architecture.
The oldest building is Anna Tower, which is used as an observation deck. Most of the houses here are former or current spa manors. However, the most popular building is the former Grand Hotel, now known as the Main Spa House in the city.
Szczawno-Zdroj Park
The key destination in Szczawno-Zdroj is the central park, known locally as "Park Zdrojowy." In my opinion, the most interesting sights are concentrated here. I enjoyed the serene and therapeutic environment, beautifully landscaped views, and fresh mountain air.
In the park, you can find a path leading to Anna Tower, which offers a panoramic view of the city. The park is a vast area perfect for walking. There is a waterfall, diverse plant species, and attractive architecture. Let's explore the latter.
Szczawno-Zdroj Walking Hall
A picture of this hall inspired me to travel here.
The Walking Hall was designed to provide spa guests with a sheltered place to walk and relax, regardless of the weather. Although the wooden building burned down twice, it was fortunately rebuilt each time. One wall of the hall features a depiction of Asclepius, the Greek god of medicine.
The Walking Hall is located within the park, seamlessly integrating with the park's paths, gardens, and other attractions.
Mineral Water Pump House
The building combined with the Walking Hall is the Mineral Water Pump House. I was fascinated as I entered. The interior is airy, with large windows, arches, columns, and beautiful tile work, making the space stunning. Throughout the building, you can find many relaxing zones with sofas, plants, and amazing window views.
Surrounded by soft light and this incredible ambiance, I tasted mineral waters with various beneficial properties.
“Frąckowiak” Cafe
My final stop while exploring Szczawno-Zdroj was the charming “Frąckowiak” Cafe, located near the Mineral Water Pump House. This tiny, cozy wooden house features a bakery that dates back to the 20th century. The café is just as beautiful inside as it is outside. When I walked in, I immediately felt a refined yet homely atmosphere. I ended my day with a puff pastry cream horn and a tasty cup of coffee.
